ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened its NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 first-round win over Robert Morris on Thursday (Nov. 21) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, the Wolverines advance to the second round and will face No. 5-seed Dayton on Sunday (Nov. 24) at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
Two Wolverines got their first goal of 2024 as Matthew Fisher and Duilio Herrera each notched a marker for the first time this season. Bryce Blevins assisted on Fisher's score, and Murphy Parker provided the crucial pass on Herrera's tally. Isaiah Goldson logged his sixth shutout and racked up four saves to keep Robert Morris (9-7-3) off the board. The win marked Michigan's first NCAA Tournament win since 2012.
Fisher quickly got Michigan (9-4-7) off the mark in the 13th minute when he found the top of the net from outside, vaulting Michigan in front 1-0. Both teams had opportunities and shots on target following the opening goal, but neither side was able to score as the first half ended with a 1-0 Michigan lead.
Michigan took control of the match in the second half, outshooting RMU 5-1. Will Baker fired two shots towards the goal, but Robert Morris stood its ground against the barrage. The decisive score came in the 80th minute when Herrera fired a ball past the keeper and into the net to double the Maize and Blue's advantage to 2-0. The Wolverine defense held its ground and did not allow a shot attempt over the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
