SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, conceding twice in the final five minutes of a 2-1 setback against Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 6) at Alumni Stadium.

Duilio Herrera gave the Wolverines the lead in the 21st minute, finishing a set piece with assists from Joao Paulo Ramos and Austin Su. Michigan finished the match with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, putting six of its seven attempts on target.

The Wolverines broke through on a corner kick, with Su playing the ball short to Ramos on the right side. Ramos sent the ball into the penalty box, where Herrera headed it into the right corner of the net to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.

Michigan (2-1-1) protected its one-goal advantage deep into the second half, holding Notre Dame off the scoreboard while continuing to force the Fighting Irish into off-target attempts.

Notre Dame (2-1-2) finally broke through in the 86th minute after video review resulted in a penalty, which the Fighting Irish converted to level the match. Three minutes later, Notre Dame struck again to take its first lead of the night and held on for the 2-1 win.

Michigan will return home to open Big Ten play against Indiana on Friday (Sept. 11) at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
