ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Portland in its final non-conference match of the season on Sunday (Oct. 4) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Portland (5-3-2) scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half, finding the back of the net in the 18th and 21st minutes to take a 2-0 lead.
Michigan (3-4-2) generated more offensive pressure in the second half, recording five of its six shots over the final 45 minutes while keeping the Pilots off the scoreboard.
The Wolverines broke through with nine seconds remaining when Alex Gimple scored the first goal of his career. Nico Pendleton and Kian Concepcion earned assists on the play as Gimple finished past the Portland goalkeeper to pull Michigan within 2-1.
Michigan pushed for an equalizer over the final seconds but was unable to generate another scoring opportunity before time expired.
The Wolverines return to Big Ten play on Friday (Oct. 9), hosting Penn State at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
