ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michael Haikal scored his first goal as a Wolverine in the 87th minute to lift the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Oakland on Tuesday (Sept. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Haikal's late game-winner followed a first-half penalty-kick goal from Grayson Elmquist, who scored his fourth goal of the season and second from the penalty spot.
Michigan (3-3-2) generated 14 shots, including four on goal, while limiting Oakland (3-3-3) to just one shot on goal over 90 minutes.
After controlling much of the opening 42 minutes, Michigan drew its third penalty kick of the season when Kian Concepcion was fouled in the box in the 43rd minute. Elmquist converted the opportunity to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Oakland quickly responded at the start of the second half, scoring in the 47th minute to level the match at 1-1.
The teams exchanged chances throughout the second half before Michigan broke through with less than four minutes remaining. Haikal fired a shot into the upper-right corner of the net in the 87th minute to put the Wolverines back in front and secure the victory.
Next up, the Wolverines remain in Ann Arbor to take on Portland on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 2 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
