CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team lost its season opener, 3-0, at defending national champion and No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, held at UNC's Francis Henry Field. U-M played UNC to a stalemate in the first half, but the Tarheels scored 21 seconds into the second half and added two more tallies to cap the scoring.
Mallory Albini
Senior/junior goalkeeper Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) made eight saves in the defeat. Her four stops in the first half kept the game scoreless early on. Freshman Mallory Albini (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) came the closest to scoring at 45:11 when her redirection skipped across the goal line but was ultimately knocked away.
Twenty one seconds into the second half, a long pass from Kelsey Kolojejchick found a seam in the U-M defense and reached Taryn Gjurich, who was wide open a few yards inside the U-M circle. Gjurich's subsequent shot from near the penalty stroke dot was deflected by an outstretched Barwick but still reached the back of the cage.
In the 53rd minute Kolojejchick increased UNC's lead to 2-0 on a one-time shot from the right of the cage that went inside the right post. UNC's Meghan Dawson, an older sister of U-M junior Hannah Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), scored on a direct penalty corner in the 61st minute.
Michigan opposes No. 6 Wake Forest on Sunday (Aug. 29) to complete the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Game time is 2 p.m.
