ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 6 Iowa in overtime on Friday (Oct. 2) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Michigan (5-4, 1-2 Big Ten) controlled the ball in the first frame, putting three shots on target and drawing a penalty corner in the last minute of play. Dionne van Aalsum put the Hawkeyes (10-1, 2-1 Big Ten) on the board at 17:51, sending the Wolverines into halftime down a goal.
U-M looked for the equalizer early in the second half, firing a shot off a penalty-corner attempt just 26 seconds into the third quarter. Eva Bernardy had the best chance for the Maize and Blue to score with a pair of shots on a pair of corners, but the Iowa defense stuffed both attempts and Michigan went into the final frame still at a deficit.
Natalie Millman converted a corner with just under seven minutes left on the clock, tipping in the ball off a pass from Milaw Clause. Maxine Rogge attempted to find the go-ahead goal off a penalty corner with under one minute left in regulation, but the Iowa defense blocked the shot and sent the game into overtime.
Esmée de Willigen scored on the deflection from Cami Wiseman with 6:37 left on the clock, but the goal was waived off after official review. The Hawkeyes put the game away two minutes later, with Frederique van Cleef scoring on a deflection from outside the circle.
U-M outshot the Hawkeyes 14-8, with Millman's season-high four shots leading both teams, and put seven on target to Iowa's six. The Wolverine defense held Iowa to zero penalty corners, the second time the defensive unit has done so this season.
The Wolverines will continue their four-game homestand, closing out the weekend against No. 1 Northwestern at noon on Sunday (Oct. 4) at Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
