ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team snapped a four-game skid with a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Monmouth on Sunday (Oct. 11) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Wolverines (6-6, 1-4 Big Ten) got on the board quickly, with Juliette Manzur scoring off a rebound from an Eva Bernardy shot following a penalty corner in the first 30 seconds of the game. Michigan attempted to build on its lead to close out the first frame with a pair of corners, but shots from Bernardy and Cami Wiseman were stopped by the Hawks' goalkeeper.
Monmouth (8-3, 3-0 CAA) fired a pair of shots in the first minute of the second quarter, but Hala Silverstein made a save to keep the Hawks scoreless. The Wolverines posted just one shot in the second frame, but Tilly Gibson's attempt was stopped by the Monmouth goalkeeper.
Coming out of halftime, Monmouth drew its first penalty corner of the day, but Abby Burnett recorded her fourth career defensive save to keep Ava Zerfass from converting. Despite four penalty-corner attempts in the third quarter, the Maize and Blue was unable to widen the scoring gap and took a 1-0 lead into the final frame.
Natalie Millman intercepted a pass from the Hawks, allowing Esmée de Willigen to get the ball into the circle and chip it past Charlie Bowman to double U-M's lead at the 46:23 mark.
The Hawks were quick to respond, converting a penalty corner just 19 seconds later to cut Michigan's lead to 2-1. Monmouth pulled Bowman with less than four minutes remaining but could not generate a shot to force overtime.
Michigan outshot Monmouth 12-5, with Bernardy's five attempts leading all players, and put eight shots on goal. The Wolverines also held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners, holding the Hawks without a corner in the first half.
U-M will open a three-game road stretch with a pair of conference matchups at Rutgers (Oct. 16) and Penn State (Oct. 18). Both games will stream live on B1G+.
