OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan field hockey team fell 2-1 at No. 11 Miami (Ohio) on Sunday (Oct. 25) at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.
Michigan (6-9, 1-6 Big Ten) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Sofia Ghanbari fired a shot wide on a penalty corner at the 7:26 mark before Michigan drew a second corner less than 30 seconds later. Miami (12-4, 7-1 MAC) goalkeeper cleared a shot from Eva Bernardy, but Natalie Millman found the back of the cage on the rebound to put the Wolverines on the board.
The Maize and Blue maintained pressure with another penalty corner later in the period, but a Kelsey Reviello shot was cleared by the Miami defense. In the second quarter, both goalkeepers turned away opportunities to preserve Michigan's 1-0 lead at halftime.
Miami equalized early in the third quarter after Millman was issued a green card at the 33:02 mark. The RedHawks earned consecutive penalty corners less than 30 seconds later and converted to tie the game with 12 minutes remaining in the quarter. Miami continued to push forward, but Hala Silverstein made a pair of saves to keep the game tied entering the final 15 minutes.
With less than five minutes remaining, Justina Intze found the back of the cage following consecutive penalty corners to give Miami its first lead of the game. Despite a green card issued to Intzes approximately one minute later, the RedHawks held off Michigan's final push to secure the 2-1 win.
Miami held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners, including four in the fourth quarter. The RedHawks also held a 10-8 edge in shots and kept Michigan without a shot in the final quarter. Reviello and Juliette Manzur led the Wolverines with two shots apiece, while Miami's Malena Sabez led all players with five. Both goalkeepers recorded four saves.
Michigan will close out the regular season at home against rival Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 30) at 5 p.m. The game will stream live on B1G+, and Michigan's five seniors will be honored following the contest.
