STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 18) at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
Penn State (10-4, 4-1 Big Ten) established an early lead, scoring off a penalty corner at the 3:40 mark. Michigan (6-8, 1-6 Big Ten) looked to answer later in the period, but shots from Tilly Gibson and Eva Bernardy were blocked, and the Nittany Lions carried the one-goal advantage into the second quarter.
Anjolie Norton and Cami Wiseman generated opportunities on a penalty corner just two minutes into the second quarter, but neither attempt found the back of the cage. Michigan continued to threaten midway through the period, forcing consecutive saves on shots from Dru Moffett and Esmée de Willigen. Penn State responded with a pair of penalty corners late in the half, but Hala Silverstein made three second-quarter saves to keep the deficit at one heading into halftime.
The Nittany Lions doubled their advantage early in the third quarter when Natalie Freeman connected with Ella Gaitan for her second goal of the game at the 33:09 mark.
Gibson cut the deficit in half just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter with the first goal of her career. Abby Burnett sent the ball into the circle, where Gibson swept it past the Penn State goalkeeper to pull Michigan within one.
The Wolverines continued to push for the equalizer, holding Penn State without a shot in the fourth quarter while generating four attempts of their own. U-M earned a penalty corner at the 48:37 mark and produced three shots over the next three minutes, but the Nittany Lions held off the late attack to preserve the 2-1 decision.
Michigan finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Gibson, Moffett and Wiseman led the Wolverines with two shots apiece, while Silverstein finished with three saves.
The Maize and Blue will close out its non-conference schedule at Miami (Ohio) on Monday (Oct. 26). The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will stream live on RedHawks All-Access.
