Michigan Field Hockey: 2001 NCAA Champion
The 2001 University of Michigan field hockey team made history on Sunday, Nov. 18, in Kent, Ohio, shutting out top-ranked Maryland 2-0 to claim the University's first women's team national championship. The Wolverines received goals from Adrienne Hortillosa and Kristi Gannon in the title game, while goaltender Maureen Tasch made 11 saves in posting her then school-record eighth shutout of the season. Gannon, Hortillosa, Tasch, Stephanie Johnson and Katy Moyneur were named to the all-tournament team.
Michigan's road to the title began at home as the Wolverines were selected to host the NCAA first and second rounds for the first time. Playing at Phyllis Ocker Field, U-M defeated No. 4 North Carolina 5-2 in its opening game behind April Fronzoni's hat trick before topping Big Ten Conference co-champion Michigan State 2-1 in overtime on Catherine Foreman's game-winning goal. The Wolverines then used three second-half goals to get past Princeton 4-2 in the semifinal round and earn a spot in the national championship game for the second time in three years.
Michigan finished 18-5 overall behind a strong defense that limited opponents to a 1.02 goals-against average. Catherine Foreman earned third team All-America honors for the second year in a row, and she was joined on the All-Big Ten first team by Gannon and Johnson, with Fronzoni, Hortillosa and Tasch on the all-conference second team. The offense was powered by four double-digit goal scorers in Fronzoni (13), Gannon (11), Johnson (11) and Hortillosa (10), while Foreman (17) and Ali Balmer (11) paced the Wolverines in assists.

"I'm very proud of our team. Maryland has such tremendous talent and they're a wonderful team, and to go out and play them for the national championship and be victorious has me thrilled. Our team effort included everybody, and that's how it's been all year. We don't have any superstars, we just have a team that plays hard and plays well together. I'm just happy to bring another one home for the Wolverines. Men's program, women's programs, revs, non-revs, it doesn't matter. We're just really proud to be a part of the University. They have given us so much tremendous support to help us be successful, and we're just happy we're able to bring home a championship." -- Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
