Wolverines Sweep Sharks for Opening-Night Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept LIU 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-13) on Friday night (Aug. 28), taking the season-opening match at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (1-0) hit .475 as a team, committing just five attack errors, while putting down 43 kills on 80 total attempts. Ella Demetrician led the Wolverines with 12 kills on a .550 hitting percentage, while Sydney Schnichels added 11 kills and hit .421. Setters Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards directed the Michigan offense with 20 and 14 assists, respectively. Ece Senyapici, Meredith Martin, Leni Stanton-Parker and Kapri Garnett all made their debuts.
LIU (0-1) was held to a .101 hitting percentage, with 28 digs and 5.5 blocks from the Wolverine defensive line. U-M added seven aces in the match and was aced just twice.
In the opening set, Michigan rolled to a 25-11 win after splitting the first six points. Demetrician went on a 6-0 service run at the line, with Schnichels tallying two kills and a block. LIU tried to fight back, but another 6-0 run, this time with two aces from Jenna Hanes, saw U-M take a 17-8 lead. Michigan closed out the set on a 7-1 run with a kill from Senyapici to seal the set win.
The second set proved more competitive, featuring eight ties and three lead changes -- the latest coming at 9-9 before the Wolverines pulled away to secure a 25-22 second-set victory. An ace and kill from Schnichels helped U-M to a 12-9 lead, but the Sharks rallied to within one at 14-13 and two other times; however, a kill from Schnichels finished the set.
Michigan then closed out the match thanks to a 25-13 third-set win highlighted by a 10-1 run beginning at 4-4. On the run, Edwards tallied two aces while Demetrician recorded two kills and an ace. The lead was too much for LIU, and the Wolverines finished the match with a kill from Lydia Johnson to secure the opening-night victory.
On Saturday (Aug. 29) at 2 p.m., the Wolverines return to action against Miami at Cliff Keen Arena. The matchup will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
