ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a .329 hitting percentage, the University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Miami in three sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 29) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (2-0) compiled 40 kills on 82 attacks with 13 errors, resulting in a .329 hitting percentage. Miami (0-2) finished with 23 kills and 22 errors on 94 attempts for a .011 hitting percentage. The home team out-dug the visitors 42-22 and posted 6.5 total blocks.
Ella Demetrician led Michigan with 12 kills on 28 attacks while Cymarah Gordon recorded 11 kills and hit .421 on 19 swings. Jenna Hanes contributed five kills and two service aces, and Ece Senyapici added four kills and five block assists. Morgan Burke distributed 20 assists and tallied eight digs, while Meredith Martin anchored the defense with 14 digs and delivered two service aces.
In the first set, Michigan held Miami to a -.103 hitting percentage, as the visitors committed 10 attack errors. The Hurricanes opened on a 3-0 run, but Michigan tied it at four before pulling away with a 4-0 run to lead 11-7. The teams traded points until the Wolverines ended the set on a 4-0 run, finishing with back-to-back blocks from Senyapici assisted by Lydia Johnson and Sydney Schnichels. Michigan collected 11 kills and hit .364 to secure the 25-15 set win.
The teams tied eight times and exchanged the lead five times in the second set before a Michigan 7-0 run beginning at 9-9 put U-M ahead 16-9. During the run, three different Wolverines tallied kills and Gordon and Senyapici combined on a block to cap the rally. The Hurricanes tried to battle back, but Michigan closed out the set on a 5-0 run, this time led by an ace and a kill from Hanes. Michigan took the second set 25-15 but improved its offensive output to a .400 hitting percentage with 13 kills, while Miami hit .029 with eight kills.
Michigan and Miami tied nine times and traded the lead twice in the final set as the Hurricanes stayed in the match longer in the third set. The Wolverines went on a 7-0 run, led by two kills and a block from Gordon and two kills from Senyapici, to lead 16-10. Miami tied the match at 18, forcing Michigan's only timeout of the match. Out of the timeout, the Hurricanes committed a service error, sparking a 5-0 run that featured two kills from Johnson. A service error halted the run, but a kill from Schnichels put U-M at match point, and Hanes delivered an ace to secure the three-set win.
The Wolverines return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 1) at 6:30 p.m. against South Carolina when U-M hosts the Allstate Big Ten/SEC Challenge at Crisler Center. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
