ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team fell 2-1 to Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 30) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Ohio State (7-10, 2-6 Big Ten) built an early lead in the first period, scoring off a penalty corner just over four minutes into the game. Michigan (6-10, 1-7 Big Ten) responded with a pair of shots from Cami Wiseman later in the period, but both missed wide, and the Wolverines went into the second quarter down 1-0.
The Maize and Blue drew four penalty corners in the second frame, firing shots on two, but attempts from both Juliette Manzur and Anjolie Norton were blocked. OSU attempted a corner of its own, sending a shot wide to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
Despite a save from Hala Silverstein on a Buckeye penalty corner attempt early in the third, Ohio State extended its lead after drawing another corner seconds later to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage heading into the final frame.
U-M came out of the break on fire, generating four corners to try to cut into the Buckeyes' lead. Natalie Millman put the Wolverines on the board at the 54:04 mark after Abby Burnett drove into the circle and passed it to Millman in front of the cage.
Michigan had a few looks after the goal but could not capitalize, and the Wolverines were unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes.
The Wolverines outshot Ohio State 12-4, putting just two on target, and outcornered the Buckeyes 14-4.
