ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team topped Kent State 4-0 on Friday (Sept. 4) at Phyllis Ocker Field in the Wolverines' home opener.

Michigan controlled the ball early, putting four shots on target to force four saves from Kent State goalie Michaela Skinner. The Golden Flashes just edged U-M in penalty corners, 2-1, but the Wolverine defense stuffed both attempts, and the teams ended the first frame scoreless.

Kelsey Reviello put the Maize and Blue on the board at the 28:18 mark, converting the team's fifth of seven penalty corners in the second quarter. Kent State found the back of the cage to even the score with just under two minutes left in the third, but a video review overturned the goal for a dangerous ball violation.

Less than three minutes into the final frame, Natalie Millman found the back of the cage off an assist from Reviello to put U-M up 2-0. Eva Bernardy followed up with a goal of her own five minutes later, her second of the season, before Dru Moffett put the game away at the 58:38 mark off a pass from Bernardy at the top of the circle.

Reviello and Bernardy led both teams with six shots each, while freshman Tilly Gibson recorded four. The Wolverines held Kent State to just three shots and had a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. Hala Silverstein recorded one save, while Skinner posted 12.

U-M will close out the weekend at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 6) against Vermont at Phyllis Ocker Field in the second of a three-game homestand. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
