ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team topped Vermont, 4-1, on Sunday (Sept. 6) at Phyllis Ocker Field, led by Esmée de Willigen's first career hat trick.

Vermont (3-1) took an early lead, scoring just over three minutes into the game on a redirect. Michigan (3-1) tied the game as the first quarter wound down, with de Willigen scoring off a rebound from Natalie Millman's shot at the 13:05 mark.

De Willigen scored the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes left in the half after Abby Burnett sent the ball into the circle from the right side, before completing the hat trick on a pass from Dru Moffett just 25 seconds into the third quarter.

Anjolie Norton scored her first career goal at the 51:21 mark, converting a penalty corner off the insert from Juliette Manzur to seal the win.

The Wolverines outshot the Catamounts 16-8, forcing six saves from UVM goalie Ila Gunner, while U-M's Hala Silverstein recorded just one. De Willigen and Eva Bernardy led the team with three shots apiece.

The teams were even in the penalty corner battle, drawing six apiece, and U-M successfully defended all six despite being shorthanded on one UVM corner attempt following a Michigan foul.

The Wolverines will close out their three-game homestand on Friday (Sept. 11), hosting California at 5 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
