ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team will close out its three-game homestand against California on Friday (Sept. 11) at 5 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Michigan is 3-1 on the season after earning a pair of wins against Kent State and Vermont last weekend in its home-opening weekend. The Wolverines opened the season with a 1-1 record at the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• The Maize and Blue have outscored their opponents 10-4 through the first two weekends of play, scoring four goals apiece against Kent State and Vermont. U-M successfully defended all nine penalty corners last weekend, including one while shorthanded against Vermont, and has put 42 of its 63 shots on goal (.667).
• Esmée de Willigen led the scoring effort last weekend, recording the first hat trick of her career against Vermont. After the Catamounts scored at the 3:27 mark, de Willigen evened the score with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter and added the game-winner late in the second before completing the hat trick 25 seconds into the third quarter.
• Eva Bernardy leads the team with 14 shots, including six on goal, while 10 other Wolverines have recorded multiple shots. Juliette Manzur leads the team with two assists, both coming on penalty corner conversions.
• Bernardy, Sofia Ghanbari, Kelsey Reviello, Natalie Millman, Dru Moffett and Anjolie Norton have all found the back of the cage this season. Ghanbari and Norton scored the first goals of their careers, with Ghanbari recording the overtime game-winner against North Carolina in the season opener. Bernardy has scored twice, converting a penalty stroke against the Tar Heels and a penalty corner against Kent State.
• Michigan's defense has allowed just 29 shots through four games, with eight on goal. U-M has conceded 13 penalty corners, including none against North Carolina -- the first team to hold the Tar Heels without a penalty corner since UConn in 2014 -- and has successfully defended 11 of the 13. In the cage, Hala Silverstein has recorded four saves on eight shots on goal faced with a 0.98 goals-against average.
• California is 3-0 after defeating American, Central Michigan and Columbia and will make its road debut Friday. The Golden Bears have outscored their opponents 12-5, including a shutout of Columbia. Liz Klompmaker leads the team with five goals, while Josefina Moyano has scored twice. California has allowed 11 penalty corners with just one converted, while starting goalie Carine van Wiechen has recorded five saves with a 1.73 goals-against average.
• Michigan is 7-2 all-time against California and has won the last two meetings. The teams last met in 2019, when U-M earned a 2-1 victory at Underhill Field in Berkeley, Calif.
