ANN ARBOR, Mich -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell 1-0 to California on Friday (Sept. 11) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

Michigan outshot the Golden Bears 6-2 through the first 30 minutes, forcing California to make three of its four saves before the end of the half. Cal drew the first corner seven minutes into the game, but the U-M defense sent the ball out of the circle.

The Golden Bears took the lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, drawing back-to-back corners and converting on their final attempt. Cal's defense stuffed any offensive effort for the Wolverines, keeping Michigan from firing any shots heading in the stanza.

U-M's best chance to find the equalizer came in the final quarter on its lone penalty corner, with a shot attempt from Maxine Rogge that was blocked up front. The Maize and Blue drew a penalty corner with less than three minutes on the clock, but the call was overturned following a video review.

Michigan outshot the Golden Bears 10-8, with Hala Silverstein recording a season-high three saves. Kelsey Reviello, Sofia Ghanbari and Juliette Manzur led the team with two shots each.

U-M will open Big Ten play on Friday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m., when it travels to East Lansing for a rivalry matchup with Michigan State. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
