EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team opened its Big Ten slate with a 2-1 victory over rival Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 18) at Ralph Young Field.

Michigan State (3-4, 0-1 Big Ten) controlled the first 15 minutes of play, firing the only two shots of the quarter on a pair of penalty corners but could not find the back of the cage. Michigan's best chance to get on the board in the first half came in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter on a pair of penalty corners, but both shots from Eva Bernardy were kicked away by the Spartan goalie.

Milaw Clause drew a pair of penalty corners less than a minute into the third frame, and an MSU foul following a shot from Maxine Rogge gave the Wolverines (4-2, 1-0 Big Ten) their second penalty stroke opportunity of the season. Kelsey Reviello converted the stroke to put U-M on the board with her second goal of the season.

The Maize and Blue drew another pair of penalty corners just one minute later, with Bernardy converting with the assist from Grace Hunter and Abby Burnett to give Michigan a 2-0 lead at the 32-minute mark.

MSU drew a corner of its own at the 35-minute mark before starting goalie Hala Silverstein earned a green card for an equipment issue and forced sophomore Maddie Grand to enter the cage. The Spartans got on the board less than a minute later to cut the U-M lead to 2-1.

Neither team generated much offense in the final frame, and Michigan was held without a shot or a penalty-corner attempt. Michigan State fired just one shot on a pair of corners but could not find the equalizer.

The Wolverines held a 10-9 edge in shots, with Bernardy firing a game-leading five, putting nine on target to MSU's two. U-M also held a narrow 8-7 penalty-corner advantage.

Michigan will continue its three-game road swing on Sunday (Sept. 20) at Central Michigan for another in-state matchup. The game will start at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on Chippewas All Access.
