Notes
• Michigan enters the weekend, winning five of its last six games, including a pair of victories over No. 15 Oregon. The Wolverines run-ruled the Ducks on April 2 and walked them off two days later. After opening Big Ten play 1-6, U-M has rebounded with four wins in its last five conference games, securing series victories over Rutgers and Oregon. Michigan also picked up midweek wins over Eastern Michigan (15-4, seven innings) and Central Michigan (6-4).
• Shane Brinham delivered a strong performance against Oregon, tossing a seven-inning complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts. He allowed just three hits, issued no walks, and retired 15 consecutive batters, earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA co-National Pitcher of the Week honors. The freshman has not walked a batter in his last 10 innings. Brinham holds a 4.63 ERA over 23.1 innings with 21 strikeouts, a 2-3 record and one save. Â
• Colby Turner continues to pace the Wolverines offensively, ranking among the Big Ten's top five in batting average (third), doubles (fifth), hits per game (third) and total bases (fifth). He carries a 12-game hitting streak and has reached base in 18 straight games, highlighted by eight multi-hit performances during that stretch. Turner went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs against EMU, and added a run, RBI and hit versus CMU. Â
• Kurt Barr has been a steady presence on the mound, most recently striking out nine over six innings while allowing just one run. With that outing, he became the 15th player in program history to reach 200 career strikeouts. The senior leads Michigan in innings pitched (41), strikeouts (49) and ERA (3.29). This season, he has allowed two runs or less in all but one start and is the only Wolverine player to start a game every weekend.
• Greg Pace Jr. recorded his first home run of the season earlier this week and continues to produce offensively, batting .292 with a .383 on-base percentage. He has been especially effective against Michigan State, hitting .643 in eight career games against the Spartans.
• David Lally Jr. turned in a strong start against Oregon, allowing one earned run over six innings while striking out five. He also impressed in a relief outing against Rutgers, tossing 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. The senior holds a 4.68 ERA over 32.2 innings pitched with 30 strikeouts and 11 walks, allowing 17 earned runs on 34 hits.Â
• Noah Miller has provided a spark in recent weeks, reaching base in nine of his last 10 games -- while collecting 11 hits during that stretch. He is hitting .292 on the season with 14 RBIs.
• Gavin DeVooght ranks second in the Big Ten and tied for fifth nationally with seven saves this season. The junior's last save came on March 25 against Toledo. DeVooght holds a 4.18 ERA allowing 12 runs on 23 hits with a 0-3 record while striking out 19 batters.
• Brayden Jefferis brings a six-game hitting streak into the weekend and has been nearly flawless defensively, posting a .988 fielding percentage at third base. The sophomore has started all but one game this season. Jefferis scored twice on two hits at Eastern Michigan, and added a hit and two RBIs against Central Michigan.
• Michigan State enters the series at 10-19 and 5-10 in Big Ten play. The Spartans have won a series against Iowa and taken one game in series against Rutgers, Purdue and Northwestern. MSU is 3-3 at home this season.
• Michigan holds a 224-114-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 101-62 record in East Lansing. The Wolverines have won six straight meetings, though the Spartans claimed the last series played in East Lansing. The series dates back to June 14, 1884 -- a 13-4 win for the Wolverines.
