OMAHA, Neb. -- Shane Brinham allowed Ohio State just five hits, while the Wolverines collected just two -- both from Noah Miller -- but made them count as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated the Buckeyes 3-0 on Thursday night (May 21) in an elimination game at the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field.
Brinham (6-4) struck out a career-high 11 Buckeyes in a complete-game shutout that saw him throw a career-high 124 pitches -- the most by a Wolverine since 2016.
Not only was Miller responsible for both Michigan hits, but he brought home all three runs with Dane Morrow scoring once and Colby Turner crossing the plate twice.
With the game still scoreless after two, Michigan (33-23) loaded the bases in the third via a pair of one-out walks to Morrow and Turner and a Brayden Jefferis hit-by-pitch. Miller tallied the Wolverines' first hit, with Morrow and Turner scoring to put Michigan up 2-0. A double play ended the inning to start a run of 15 straight U-M batters retired by the Buckeyes.
Brinham struck out five over the first two frames to keep OSU (30-24) at bay early, then tossed his first 1-2-3 inning in the fifth using only seven pitches. OSU tallied a two-out single in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Brinham forced fly balls to get out of the innings.
Turner reached on an error with two outs in the eighth, breaking the streak of consecutive U-M batters retired by OSU. Jefferis drew a walk to end Gavin Kuzniewski's night after 7.2 innings and one hit allowed. Two pitches later, Miller rapped his -- and the Wolverines' -- second hit to record his third RBI as Turner scored from second. A strikeout ended the inning with U-M leading 3-0 midway through the eighth.
Brinham returned to the mound and struck out the side in the eighth to set a new-career high with 11 strikeouts, then retired OSU in order in the ninth to complete the shutout and advance the Wolverines to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.
The Wolverines will face No. 2-seeded Nebraska in the single-elimination Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday (May 22) at 5 p.m. CT at Charles Schwab Field. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
