OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was defeated 7-1 by Washington in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday night (May 20) at Charles Schwab Field. The setback sends Michigan to an elimination game against Ohio State.
Michigan (33-23) struggled offensively throughout the contest, with just one baserunner over the first three innings, courtesy of Brayden Jefferis drawing a leadoff walk in the first.
Washington (25-31) opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second before adding another run on an RBI double in the third for a 3-0 lead. David Lally Jr. took over on the mound after a leadoff walk in the third inning and allowed just one baserunner over the fourth and fifth frames.
A Noah Miller two-out single in the fourth was the first hit of the game for the Wolverines, followed by another from Matthew Ossenfort, but they were left stranded. Singles from Brenden Stressler and Drew Culbertson and a Jefferis walk loaded the bases in the fifth, but the runners went no further after a strikeout and a flyout.
Michigan got on the board in the sixth as Miller opened with a single before Ossenfort moved Miller to third with a single of his own. A sacrifice fly from Dane Morrow plated Miller to make the score 3-1 before singles from Stressler and Mullens, but both runners were left aboard after a strikeout ended the inning.
Washington added insurance runs in the seventh, scoring twice on two hits, but Lally struck out two to finish the night with seven. U-M loaded the bases again in the seventh with two walks and a fielder's choice error, but was unable to score. The Huskies added two runs in the eighth to extend their lead to 7-1. Michigan could not mount a comeback as only six batters came to the plate over the final two innings.
The Wolverines will face Ohio State at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday (May 21) at Charles Schwab Field. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
