ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program announced Wednesday (Oct. 21) that head coach Tracy Smith has signed a contract extension through the 2031 season.
Through four seasons in Ann Arbor, Smith holds a 127-103 record, including a 60-48 mark in conference play. He has increased his win total in each season at Michigan, highlighted by a 34-24 record last year that included a 17-13 mark in Big Ten play. The Wolverines have qualified for the Big Ten Tournament in each season under Smith, finishing fourth twice.
"I'm honored that Warde Manuel chose me to lead this storied program through the vast changes occurring in college athletics," said Smith. "My whole family takes pride in sharing our respect for this university with recruits and their families. The school quite simply attracts high-quality student-athletes. I am several decades into a college coaching career and feeling invigorated by the incredible people and opportunities afforded here."
Smith has helped Michigan players earn a combined four All-America honors, six Freshman All-America honors, seven All-Big Ten first-team honors, one All-Big Ten second-team honor, five All-Big Ten third-team honors and six Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. Four Wolverines have been selected in the MLB Draft during Smith's tenure, including first-round pick Mitch Voit, who became the 10th-highest draft pick in program history. In 2026, Colby Turner and Noah Miller were selected in the draft, while three additional Wolverines signed Minor League free-agent contracts.
Across four schools and 29 seasons, Smith has compiled a 932-715-1 career record, ranking 13th among active head coaches. He has led each of his three previous programs to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a College World Series appearance with Indiana in 2013.
