EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Behind a complete game from Kurt Barr, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Michigan State, 4-2, on Friday night (April 10) at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium in the series opener.
Barr (4-2) led Michigan (19-14, 6-7 Big Ten) to the victory, pitching all nine innings for his second career complete game. The senior struck out 10 Spartans, allowing just two runs on four hits while throwing a career-high 118 pitches.
The Wolverines were held scoreless through the first four innings, managing just two baserunners, but Evan Haeger opened the fifth with a single. An error, fielder's choice, and a single from Greg Pace Jr. allowed Haeger to score as U-M plated the first run of the game.
Michigan State (11-20, 5-11 Big Ten) responded immediately with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth before taking the lead in the sixth on a double. Barr limited the damage though, striking out the final batter of the frame to strand three runners. U-M answered in the seventh as Haeger launched a leadoff home run to tie the game at 2-2.
U-M retook the lead in the eighth, starting with a double from Drew Culbertson. Two walks drawn by Colby Turner and Jack Laffitte loaded the bases before Noah Miller delivered an RBI single to score Culbertson. Haeger added his third hit of the day as Turner scored from third.
A 4-2 lead was all the Wolverines needed as Barr retired the final nine batters in order, ending the game with his 10th strikeout to match his season and career high.
The Wolverines continue the series against Michigan State on Saturday (April 11) at 3:30 p.m. at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium, with the game streamed on B1G+.
