ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team grabbed an early lead and held off a Central Michigan comeback attempt for a 6-4 victory on Tuesday afternoon (April 6) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (18-14) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring all six of its runs over the first two innings while sending 16 men to the plate over the span.
A pair of bases-loaded walks in the first inning staked the Wolverines to a quick 2-0 lead. U-M did the bulk of its scoring in the next inning, with nine Wolverines coming to the dish and putting up four runs to grab a 6-0 advantage.
Drew Culbertson led off the second inning and moved to third on a Jack Laffitte single. Turner reached on a fielder's choice that scored Culbertson, and Evan Haeger tripled to bring Turner around from first. Cade Ladehoff was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch that allowed Haeger to score. A single from Jefferis brought home Ladehoff and closed the U-M scoring.
Central Michigan (11-17) doubled to open the game, but Erik Puodziunas held the Chippewas without another baserunner for the remainder of his three-inning start. The Chippewas scored twice in the fourth as free passes led to the damage. After a strong fifth inning from Preston Barr, CMU got to the sophomore and tacked on two runs on three hits to cut U-M's lead to 6-4. Brandon Mann (1-0) entered the game and struck out the first batter he faced to end the sixth. He faced the minimum three batters in each of the remaining three innings after a fielder's choice and caught stealing, retiring the two batters who reached in the seventh.
Michigan had a chance to add to its lead in the third with a one-out single from Culbertson, but he got no further.
U-M recorded seven hits in the contest, with seven players accounting for them. Haeger scored twice and added an RBI, while Jefferis registered two RBI. Puodziunas pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Mann earned the win after closing out the game without allowing a run in the final 3.1 innings and striking out one.
The Wolverines will next head to East Lansing for a three-game conference series against Michigan State at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium. First pitch for Friday's (April 10) series opener is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
