YPSILANTI, Mich. -- A breakout offensive performance lifted the University of Michigan baseball team to a 15-4 run-rule win over Eastern Michigan on Monday afternoon (April 6) at Oestrike Stadium.
Michigan (17-14) racked up 15 runs on 14 hits across seven innings, highlighted by a six-run second inning that set the tone early. After the first out, the Wolverines strung together seven straight batters reaching base, beginning with a Brayden Jefferis single. Following a walk by Matthew Ossenfort, Greg Pace Jr. launched a three-run homer to right field to open the scoring.
Michigan kept the pressure on as Elie Kligman singled and Drew Culbertson was hit by a pitch. Cooper Mullens followed with an RBI single, and Colby Turner added an RBI double. Mullens later scored on a groundout to cap the big inning.
Eastern Michigan (10-21) responded with two runs in the third on a pair of singles and a double, but Michigan quickly answered. Mullens and Turner opened the fourth with back-to-back singles, and after a sacrifice bunt, Cade Ladehoff delivered a two-run single. The Eagles added a two-run homer in the bottom half, but that would be their final push.
The Wolverines broke the game open in the fifth when Kligman and Culbertson reached base ahead of Turner, who blasted a three-run home run. Pace later drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage.
Michigan sealed the run-rule victory with three runs in the seventh. Culbertson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after a walk and Turner's fourth hit of the day, the Wolverines capitalized on an error, a sacrifice fly from Jefferis, and a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
On the mound, Michigan allowed just four runs on six hits while striking out eight and issuing only one walk. Grant Bradley started and went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Justin Brown followed briefly before Wyatt Novara (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning, striking out three. Preston Barr closed the game with 1.2 perfect innings, fanning three.
Offensively, five Wolverines recorded multiple hits, led by Turner's four-hit, four-RBI performance. Pace matched him with four RBIs, while Culbertson scored three times. Kligman and Mullens each crossed the plate twice.
Michigan will return home to host Central Michigan on Tuesday (April 7) at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
