ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a strong bullpen outing, the University of Michigan baseball team shut down Bowling Green late to win 9-6 on Wednesday afternoon (April 21) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (24-16) jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs across the first two innings. In the second, Evan Haeger and Joonsung Park singled and advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Campbell. A walk loaded the bases, and a sacrifice bunt scored Haeger. A Turner sac fly scored Park to give U-M a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Cade Ladehoff drew a one-out walk followed by a Haeger single and a walk from Park to load the bases. Campbell doubled to left-center and cleared the bases. Two batters later, Campbell scored on a bunt single from Drew Culbertson to extend the Michigan advantage to 6-0.
Bowling Green (15-23) was held scoreless by Grant Bradley over the first three innings but scored five runs on four hits in the fourth to cut the Wolverines lead to one run. Preston Barr (1-1) took over with one out in the fifth and struck out two Falcons to silence the visitors' bats.
U-M got a run back in the fifth, when Greg Pace Jr. scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Cade Ladehoff, but that was the extent of the damage as the Wolverines led 7-5.
Between Barr, Wyatt Novara and Gavin DeVooght, the Falcons were held to just two hits and two walks over the final four innings, scoring just once more in the seventh. The Wolverines scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Brayden Jefferis single that scored Turner.
U-M added an insurance run on the ninth when Turner plated Pace, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.
DeVooght earned his ninth save of the season, allowing just one hit over the final 2.1 innings while striking out two. Barr picked up his first win of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief work.
At the plate, Turner, Jefferis and Haeger all tallied multiple hits while Haeger scored twice and Turner tallied two RBIs. Park and Pace joined Haeger with two runs scored, while Campbell led the way with three RBI -- all coming on the double. Turner has now recorded a hit in 21 straight games, has scored in 18 straight contests and has reached base safely in 27.
The Wolverines will return to action on Friday (April 24) as they begin a three-game conference series against Washington at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
