SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored a pair of first-inning runs and it was all the Wolverines needed as starter Tate Carey made them count, shutting out San Diego 9-0 on Saturday night (Feb. 29) at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field to even their weekend series at one game apiece.
Michigan (5-4) jumped into the lead out of the gate. Carson Luna doubled, followed by a Colby Turner single to score Luna, putting the Wolverines up 1-0. Turner advanced to third after a stolen base and an error. Two batters later, Brenden Stressler grounded out, but Turner scored to put U-M up 2-0 after the first frame.
The Wolverines push three more runs across after some good two-out hitting in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Greg Pace Jr. doubled to bring home Noah Miller, Stressler and Cooper Mullens and extend the U-M lead to 5-0.
San Diego (7-3) was stifled by Carey, who threw six shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing just five hits. The Toreros' best chance came in the third after a two-out single and walk, but he forced a groundout to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Toreros attempted to cut into the lead with a leadoff single, but the runner was gunned down trying to steal by Miller -- his second of the game. San Diego drew a one-out walk and singled, but Carey finished his outing with a strikeout.
Grant Bradley relieved Carey in the seventh, pitching a scoreless frame to keep the shutout intact.
The Wolverines put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth. A double from Brayden Jefferis and walks from Pace and Cade Ladehoff preceded pinch hitter Jonathan Kim's single through the left side to score a pair. Turner followed with a single of his own to plate Ladehoff. A groundout scored Kim, extending the Michigan advantage to 9-0.
Bradley pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to clinch U-M's first shutout of the season.
Pace led the Wolverines in hits with a 3-for-3 night at the plate, with one run and three RBI, while adding a pair of walks. Luna, Turner, Stressler and Jefferies each recorded two hits in the contest, while nine Wolverines scored a run. Carey (1-1) earned the win, and Bradley fanned five over three scoreless innings to garner his first save of the season.
Michigan and San Diego will close out their series on Sunday (March 1) at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. PT. The finale will be streamed live on ESPN+.
