ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (4-3) heads to California for its annual spring break trip, beginning with a series at San Diego. The three-game series starts on Friday (Feb. 27) at 6 p.m. PT, continues on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 6 p.m. PT, and wraps up on Sunday (March 1) at 1 p.m. PT. Notes:
• The Wolverines enter the weekend with a 4-3 record, which includes three ranked wins. U-M began the season by winning the Surprise College Baseball Series with victories over No. 12-ranked Oregon State, No. 24 Arizona, and Stanford. Last weekend, Michigan went 1-2, taking down No. 15 Louisville but dropping contests to No. 16 Florida State and Kansas State.
• Colby Turner homered in all three contests over the weekend to become the 15th Wolverine since 2019 to repeat the feat. All three of Turner's home runs traveled more than 400 feet, and he is tied for fourth in the Big Ten in home runs.
• Cade Montgomery has been Michigan's best starting pitcher, leading the team in earned-run average (3.18) and WHIP (1.15) among qualified pitchers. Montgomery is 2-0 with wins over Stanford and Louisville, while striking out nine over 11.1 innings pitched.
• Gavin DeVooght is serving as U-M's closer, picking up three saves over four appearances and 6.1 innings pitched. The junior has allowed four hits and one unearned run while striking out seven. DeVooght is tied for second in the nation in saves.
• Shane Brinham started his collegiate career with 2.2 scoreless innings before giving up one run on three hits against Louisville. The freshman struck out five and is up to eight punchouts this season, tied for third on the team with Tate Carey and trailing Montgomery and Kurt Barr. Brinham is just one of eight freshmen with a win and a save so far this season.
• Carey suffered his first career loss on Friday and has struck out eight batters over 9.2 innings of work. Barr leads the team in strikeouts with 10 after striking out eight Arizona batters over seven innings, but did not make it out of the second inning in his most recent start.
• Brenden Stressler leads the Wolverines in batting average (.444) and on-base percentage (.483) this season with 12 hits in 27 at-bats. The junior transfer has two extra-base hits, has scored five runs and owns five RBI. Stressler ranks in the top 10 in the Big Ten in batting average (10th), hits (eighth) and hits per game (seventh).
• Cade Ladehoff also has double-digit hits and leads Michigan in slugging percentage (.679) and OPS (1.134). He has six extra-base hits and paces U-M with multiple doubles. The junior designated hitter has scored five runs with 10 hits and four RBI.
• Matthew Ossenfort has started four games this season, but has appeared in all seven contests, recording five hits, four runs and two RBI. His four runs have been split over two games, scoring twice in wins over Arizona and Louisville. The junior is hitting .278 this season.
• San Diego enters the series at 6-2 and is 2-0 at home. Over the weekend, the Toreros swept the Tony Gwynn Legacy event, beating Utah, Creighton and San Diego State, but are coming off an extra-inning loss to UC San Diego on Tuesday (Feb. 24). Michigan is 5-9 all-time against San Diego and is 3-6 at Fowler Park. The teams last met in 2024, with the Toreros taking three of the four contests, but the Wolverines won the most recent contest 3-2.
