SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- In a game that saw the bulk of its runs scored in the middle frames, the University of Michigan baseball team fell to San Diego 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night (Feb. 27) at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field to open its spring break trip.
With the score tied at five through nine innings, the Wolverines began the 10th with Cade Ladehoff being hit by a pitch, but he was out at second on a Brenden Stressler fielder's choice. Jonathan Kim's pinch-hit single advanced Stressler to third, but the threat stalled to bring San Diego (7-2) to the plate. Gavin DeVooght (0-1) surrendered a one-out walk followed by a double to put the winning run to third base. A Torero single to left field, just out of reach of a diving Stressler, ended the contest in walk-off fashion.
Michigan (4-4) got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning on a Drew Culbertson solo shot down the left-field line -- his first as a Wolverine -- to put U-M ahead 1-0.
Both offenses came alive in the fourth inning, with each team scoring four runs. The Wolverines started with a Colby Turner double plating Stressler from first base. With Matthew Ossenfort and Turner at second and third, Brayden Jefferis brought both home with a triple, then Jefferis came home on a Greg Pace Jr. sacrifice fly.
San Diego scored four runs on two hits, thanks in part to five free passes, to match the Wolverines, who held a 5-4 lead after four innings. In the fifth, the Toreros tied the game on a two-out RBI single.
Both teams were held scoreless through the ninth inning despite each having opportunities. Max Debiec helped the U-M cause with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out six.
In the ninth inning, Pace reached on a two-out double and Jack Laffitte walked, but the Wolverines could not bring home the go-ahead run. DeVooght set down the Toreros in order to send the game to extra innings.
Jefferis and Turner each recorded two hits and scored a run to lead the U-M offense. Turner added one RBI, while Jefferis brought home two. Starting pitcher Cade Montgomery struck out four over 3.2 innings of work, but did not factor into the decision.
Michigan will continue its series with San Diego on Saturday (Feb. 28) at Fowler Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. PT, and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
