ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to No. 16-ranked Florida State, 6-1, on Friday afternoon (Feb. 20) at Globe Life Field to open the College Baseball Series.
After recording just two hits through eight innings and trailing 6-0, Colby Turner led off the ninth with a solo home run to left field. Joe Longo was hit by a pitch and Brock Leitgeb reached on an error to put two runners on with no outs, but the Wolverines could not rally as a flyout, strikeout and groundout ended the game.
Michigan (3-1) totaled three hits, including Turner's home run, a double from Cade Ladehoff and a single from Brenden Stressler. Tate Carey made the start on the mound and suffered his first career loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Three Wolverines made their collegiate debuts. Slade Moore and Erik Puodziunas saw action on the mound, while Jack Laffitte played third base and recorded a plate appearance.
No. 16-ranked Florida State (3-0) opened the scoring in the second inning with a leadoff triple and added two runs in the fourth on four hits. Michigan's best early opportunity came in the top of the fourth when Ladehoff reached on an error and Stressler delivered the Wolverines' first hit of the day. U-M could not capitalize, however, as a strikeout and two popouts ended the inning.
The Seminoles extended their lead in the sixth with three runs on two hits to make it 6-0. Michigan went down in order in the seventh before Moore entered in relief for his collegiate debut. After allowing the first two batters to reach, he recorded three consecutive outs, including his first career strikeout.
U-M threatened again in the eighth after Laffitte was hit by a pitch and Ladehoff doubled with two outs, but a lineout to second ended the inning. Puodziunas and Michael Quedens combined for a scoreless eighth inning.
Michigan returns to action Saturday (Feb. 21) at Globe Life Field against No. 15-ranked Louisville at 11 a.m. CT on FloCollege.
