ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team defeated No. 15-ranked Louisville 8-5 on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Globe Life Field in the College Baseball Series to earn its third ranked win of the season.
Michigan (4-2) recorded its first big innings of the season, plating three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh, both of which extended its lead. The Wolverines loaded the bases in the fourth on a Colby Turner infield single, and Matthew Ossenfort walk and a two-out Greg Pace Jr. hit by pitch. Drew Culbertson lined a two-out single up the middle, and U-M added to their lead with a single from Cade Ladehoff, scoring Pace, but Culbertson was out trying to advance to third.
In the seventh, with Brayden Jefferis and Brenden Stressler aboard, Turner smacked a home run to left-center to put the Wolverines up 8-4.
Louisville (3-3) opened the scoring with a pair of first-inning triples to take a 1-0 lead, but got the run back on Noah Miller's RBI single in the second.
The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Ladehoff homered to left.
U-M starter Cade Montgomery settled in after the first inning and allowed just two baserunners until the sixth. The Cardinals opened the frame with three straight hits, scoring twice, to cut the Wolverine lead to 5-3. Shane Brinham came on in relief of Montgomery and allowed one walk, one hit -- plating the fourth Louisville run -- and struck out three.
The Cardinals scored a run in the eighth after a one-out single and triple, but Gavin DeVooght recorded a strikeout and forced a popout to strand one.
Multi-hit performances from Ladehoff, Stressler and Turner, while Culbertson and Ladehoff drove in two. Montgomery picked up the win, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Brinham struck out five in his 2.1 innings of work and DeVooght earned his third save of the season, allowing no hits with three strikeouts.
Michigan will close out the College Baseball Series on Sunday (Feb. 22) at Globe Life Field when they take on Kansas State at 6:30 p.m. CT, with the game streaming live on FloCollege.
