COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell, 15-12, to Ohio State in its season opener Sunday (Feb. 21) at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
The Wolverines (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) took 32 shots against the Buckeyes (1-1, 1-1 Big Ten), putting 25 on goal while converting on four free-position opportunities.
Graduate student Molly Garrett led U-M with four goals, while senior Caitlin Muir had two goals and two assists, and Maggie Kane had two goals and one assist. Redshirt senior Nadine Stewart and junior Kaley Thompson also netted a pair of goals.
Michigan struggled on the draw control, winning just seven on the afternoon, with Garrett and Kane each winning a pair.
Defensively, Morgan Whitaker had a team-best four ground balls and Muir had three, while Garrett had two caused turnovers.
In net, Arielle Weissman took the loss, making five saves, while Mariah Sweeney saw action in the second half with four saves against Ohio State.
The Buckeyes were the first to strike, going on a 3-0 run with 11 minutes to play in the first half to take a 7-2 advantage. The Wolverines scored two straight over the next three minutes to come within three, 7-4, with 7:32 left to play in the opening half.
The teams exchanged a pair of goals before Garrett cut the U-M lead to two, 9-7, with her third goal of the contest with just eight seconds left on the second-quarter clock.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Buckeyes were the first to light up the scoreboard. Stewart and Garrett closed the Ohio State lead to one, 11-10, scoring within 20 seconds of each other, but the Buckeyes rattled off three straight to extend its lead to 14-10 with just under 20 minutes to play.
Kane and Muir found the back of the net one more time, but it would not be enough as Ohio State would earn the win over Michigan.
Michigan returns to action Friday (Feb. 26) when it takes on Maryland for a two-game series in College Park. The Wolverines and Terrapins will take the field Friday (Feb. 26) before concluding the series next Sunday (Feb. 28).
