COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team took a 17-13 setback against No. 10 Maryland on Friday (Feb. 26) at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
The Wolverines were led by four goals from redshirt freshman Nadine Stewart, who tied a career best, while Molly Garrett, Kaitlyn Mead and Caitlin Muir each added a pair of goals.
Freshmen Annabelle Burke and Josie Gooch both scored their first career goals and Caroline Bean added another pair of assists in as many games. Michigan (0-2, 0-2 Big Ten) took 34 shots, putting 24 on goal, and won the draw control, 18-14, against Maryland (1-1, 1-1 B1G).
Garrett and Mead each won five draws and Kaley Thompson came away with four draw-control wins, a goal and an assist.
Defensively, Quinn Melidona had a team-best two caused turnovers and Stewart picked up a team-high three ground balls. In goal, Arielle Weissman made six saves in 42 minutes of play, and Mariah Sweeney made two saves in 18 minutes.
Maryland was the first to get on the scoreboard, but the Wolverines rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead with 22:07 left in the first half. The Terrapins responded with a three-goal run of their own to regain the advantage at 5-3.
Michigan came within one goal on two occasions but a second three-goal run from Maryland gave it a 10-6 lead heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, Muir added her second goal of the game with a spin move around her defender before firing it into the upper corner of the net. Less than a minute later, the Terrapins added another pair of goals to go up, 12-7, with 28:13 left to play.
Once again, Michigan responded as Bean found Stewart for a goal, and Mead scored off the draw control on the Wolverines' next possession. Each time U-M looked to close the gap, the Terrapins found a goal of their own, and held a 13-9 advantage with just over 21 minutes remaining.
Bean connected with Stewart for her second goal of the game, but again a pair of Maryland goals kept it ahead halfway through the second half.
Stewart added two final goals to the Wolverine tally, but Michigan did not find another goal over the final seven minutes of play.
The Wolverines and Terrapins will conclude their two-game series Sunday (Feb. 28) at noon. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
