
Michigan’s Season Ends in NCAA Second-Round Thriller Against Stanford

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its 2026 season come to a close in the NCAA Second Round with a 13-12 loss to No. 6 Stanford on Sunday (May 10) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The game featured six ties and six lead changes as it came down to the final five minutes of play. Truus van Wees scored back-to-back goals to give U-M (13-7) a 12-11 advantage with just over five minutes remaining. Three minutes later, Stanford (17-4) tied the score at 12-12 and added the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt with under a minute left to secure the victory.
Senior Calli Norris recorded seven points with four goals and three assists to bring her career total to 100 goals. van Wees netted back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter, while Caroline Byrd added three assists and Emma Bradbury recorded her 11th hat trick of the season.
Freshman Elizabeth Johnson notched her sixth double-digit save effort with 12 stops, while Jordyn Harrison picked up three ground balls and Lee Kestner added four. Sophomore Emma Burke won seven draw controls for U-M.
Michigan came out hot offensively as Norris scored on a free-position attempt and followed it up with an assist on a Katharine Merrifield goal to take an early 2-0 lead. Stanford responded with three straight goals of its own, including a man-up tally in the closing two minutes of the opening quarter, to earn a 3-2 advantage heading into the second.
U-M started the second quarter the same way it opened the game, scoring back-to-back goals to knot the score at 4-4. However, the Cardinal answered with two goals in less than a minute to take a 6-4 lead. The Wolverines used a Bradbury transition goal to swing momentum back in their favor, and after winning the ensuing draw, Ava Class tied the game at 6-6 with 2:27 remaining in the half.
Kassidy Isaacson scored just 15 seconds later to give U-M its first lead since the opening quarter, and Norris completed the hat trick in the final seven seconds of the half as Michigan carried an 8-6 advantage into the break.
Stanford outscored U-M, 3-2, in the third quarter as the Wolverines held onto a 10-9 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
The Cardinal opened the final quarter with back-to-back goals to swing the lead back in their favor, 11-10, with 11:16 remaining. Michigan responded with consecutive goals from van Wees with 5:17 left on the clock.
For the sixth time in the contest, Stanford tied the game with just over two minutes remaining before converting a free-position attempt with 50 seconds left to secure the win.
