ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 10-7 decision to No. 2 Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal Friday (April 24) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (12-5) stayed within striking distance throughout, with the teams tied four times and the Wolverines taking the lead on three separate occasions.
Defensively, U-M forced eight turnovers, highlighted by two caused turnovers apiece from Taylor Cullen and Ava Class. Senior Grace Callahan added three ground balls -- tying the program's career record (111) -- along with four draw controls.
On the offensive end, Emma Bradbury paced the Wolverines with four points on two goals and two assists, while six different Michigan players found the back of the net.
Michigan opened the scoring, winning the initial draw and converting on its first possession as Class finished a feed from Ceci Stein. Northwestern answered midway through the first quarter, but a key defensive stand by Callahan preserved the tie. Truus van Wees capitalized on a free-position opportunity late in the quarter to give U-M a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Northwestern responded in the second, outscoring Michigan 4-2, to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
The Wolverines pulled even early in the third quarter, as Bradbury set up Caroline Byrd for a one-timer with 12:25 remaining. After another exchange, Calli Norris tied the game at 6-6 off a Bradbury assist with 4:36 left in the third. However, Northwestern closed the quarter with three unanswered goals to take control.
NU added another early in the fourth to extend its lead to 10-6. Bradbury answered with 6:11 remaining, but Michigan could not get closer. A potential late goal that would have cut the deficit to two was waved off after review, and Northwestern ran out the clock to secure the win.
Michigan will wait to find out its NCAA Tournament seeding in the NCAA Selection Show set for Sunday (May 3) at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
