BALTIMORE, Md. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-6 decision to No. 9 Johns Hopkins on Sunday (April 12) at Homewood Field in Big Ten action.
Michigan (10-4, 4-2 Big Ten) stayed within striking distance early, trailing just 3-2 after the opening quarter, but Johns Hopkins (12-3, 5-3 Big Ten) controlled the remainder of the game to secure the win.
Sophomore Caroline Byrd led the offense with a hat trick and Ava Class had two points with a goal and an assist. Defensively, Jordyn Harrison had herself a day with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Emma Burke won 12 draw controls for her sixth double-digit win effort of the season.
Johns Hopkins opened the scoring three minutes into the contest before Michigan responded with a caused turnover that led to a quick transition opportunity. Byrd finished the sequence with a one-timer in front to tie the game at 1-1. Calli Norris later gave Michigan its second goal, driving down the lane and finishing high off a pass from Ceci Stein. The Blue Jays closed the quarter with two goals to take a 3-2 lead.
Johns Hopkins extended its advantage with two early second-quarter goals. Michigan answered late in the half as Byrd found the back of the net again to cut the deficit to two, but the Blue Jays added a goal in the final 20 seconds to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays pushed their lead to four early in the third quarter. Michigan responded midway through the period when Harrison forced a turnover that led to a transition goal by Class, trimming the deficit to 7-4. Johns Hopkins added one more before the end of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead into the final frame.
Michigan attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, scoring back-to-back goals -- including a Harrison-caused turnover that led to an assist on a Truus van Wees goal -- to cut into the deficit. However, Johns Hopkins answered with a late run, scoring three straight to close out the victory.
Michigan will return home to U-M Lacrosse Stadium for its final two regular-season games, beginning with Maryland on Thursday (April 16) at 8 p.m., followed by Northwestern on Saturday (April 18) at 6 p.m. Both games will air on the Big Ten Network.
