
U-M Upsets No. 3 Maryland for First Program Victory Over Terrapins

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team upset No. 3 Maryland in dominant fashion with a 15-4 victory Thursday evening (April 16) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (11-4, 5-2 Big Ten) defeated the Terrapins (13-2, 5-2 Big Ten) for the first time in program history as it pushed the game to a running clock with 12:36 remaining in the contest. The win also marks the first time in program history that Michigan has defeated a top-three program.
Michigan outscored Maryland 5-1 in both the second and third quarters, with six Wolverines producing multi-point outings. Junior Emma Bradbury led the offense with six points (four goals, two assists), while Ava Class and Calli Norris each scored hat tricks with one assist. Sophomore Caroline Byrd had four assists and Peyton Shreves scored a pair of goals.
Defensively, Taylor Cullen had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Grace Callahan had two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Freshman goalie Elizabeth Johnson made nine saves in cage and Emma Burke won eight draw controls.
Bradbury opened the scoring 45 seconds into the game off a pass from Byrd. Maryland responded with back-to-back goals before Michigan answered with two goals, including one in the final 12 seconds of the quarter to give U-M a 3-2 lead heading into the second stanza.
The Wolverines controlled the tempo of the second quarter, rattling off four straight goals in five minutes to go up 7-2 with 10:33 left in the half. Both teams added one final goal in the closing minutes of the half, as U-M carried an 8-3 advantage into the halftime break.
Michigan came out of the halftime break, adding two more goals to its tally. Maryland took advantage of a man-up opportunity with six minutes left in the quarter, but it was all U-M to close out the quarter, tacking on three more goals to take a 13-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The Wolverine defense kept the Terrapins off the scoreboard for the entirety of the fourth quarter while Michigan added two more goals to run the clock to victory.
Michigan concludes its 2026 regular season on Saturday (April 18) when it hosts No. 2 Northwestern at 6 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
