
Michigan Comes Up Short Late in Tight Contest with No. 2 Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game that neither team held more than a three-goal lead for the entire 60 minutes, the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 9-7 to No. 2 Northwestern on Saturday (April 18) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (11-5, 5-3 Big Ten) came back from a 3-1 deficit after the first half to go up 7-5 on back-to-back goals from Calli Norris and Peyton Shreves with 13:34 left in the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats (13-3, 7-1 Big Ten) scored the final four goals of the contest to take home the win.
Norris became the 11th player in program history to surpass 100 career points after tallying a team-high four points on the evening with two goals and two assists, while Peyton Shreves had a career-high three points with two goals and an assist.
Freshman Elizabeth Johnson put together one of her best games, coming two saves shy of a career best with 13 stops against the high-powered NU offense. Taylor Cullen and Emma Arico each had two caused turnovers, with Cullen picking up three ground balls and Arico having two.
Northwestern netted the only two goals in the first quarter to take the early lead before Ceci Stein started the Michigan scoring 40 seconds into the second quarter off a pass from Shreves. With 11:41 left in the half, NU scored its third goal of the game, and the teams settled into a defensive battle, with Johnson making three clutch saves to close out the half with U-M trailing 3-1.
The Wildcats opened the second half scoring their fourth goal with 11:40 on the clock. Michigan won the ensuing draw, which shifted the momentum as it scored four straight goals to carry a 5-4 lead into the final quarter.
NU quickly evened the score to start the fourth quarter, but back-to-back goals from Norris and Shreves gave the Wolverines a two-goal edge, 7-5, with 13:34 left to play. Northwestern stormed back with four straight goals to go up 9-7 with 4:31 remaining. Norris looked to bring Michigan within one with 2:47 left to play, but was instead issued a yellow card.
U-M was unable to generate any further offense in the final two minutes and fell to the Wildcats in the final regular-season game.
Michigan earned the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will take on No. 5 seed Penn State at noon on Wednesday (April 22) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
