ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite hat tricks from Madeline Dion and Kim Coughlan, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to Canisius, 18-10, on Sunday (March 12) inside Michigan Stadium.
Coughlan's three goals gave her 101 career goals, making her the first player in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone. Dion's hat trick was the third of her career and her best offensive performance since U-M's matchup at Notre Dame in 2015.
Michigan commanded the lead over the first 10 minutes of the game. Just four minutes into the game, Anna Schueler found Coughlan off a free-position situation for the quick score on the goal circle. Canisius fired back with a goal four minutes later, but Dion caught fire, scoring back-to-back goals exactly one minute apart to give Michigan a 3-1 lead with 19:22 left in the first half.
Canisius then scored two quick goals two minutes apart to tie the game, 3-3. A minute later Tess Korten fed Jess Angerman on the left elbow, and Angerman drove to goal, face-dodged her defender and regained the lead for the Wolverines, 4-3.
Over the next seven minutes, Canisius went on a 5-0 run, led by three goals from Erica Evans, to give the Golden Griffins an 8-4 advantage. Dion slowed Canisius' momentum with her third goal of the day at the 7:05 mark. It took U-M just nine seconds to score after Schueler won the draw and passed it ahead to Angerman, who found Dion for the quick score. Canisius ended the first half with two unanswered goals to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room.
The Griffins tallied the first goal of the second half, but Coughlan answered with a quick goal in transition to hit the 100-goal mark in her career. At the 24:47 mark, Korten fed Natalie Carti on the crease for the short-range goal, but Canisius then scored the next four goals to go up 15-7 with 13:54 left.
The teams traded goals over the final 13 minutes, with Coughlan, Angerman and Adriana Pendino netting goals for the Wolverines.
Overall, Michigan won the draw for the sixth time this season, 17-14, led by Schueler, who matched her own program record with seven draw controls. Schueler and Angerman each dished out two assists for U-M. In addition to her hat trick, Dion also caused three turnovers and had two ground balls.
