COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team challenged in the second half but could not overcome an early deficit at No. 2 Maryland, falling, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Maryland scored both of its goals on first-half penalty corners as Sarah Sprink and Ali McEvoy scored on 13:25 and 20:34, respectively. The former came on the direct shot, while McEvoy developed on a pass play in front of the cage.

The Wolverines threatened throughout the second half, outshooting the Terps, 7-5, in the frame. Senior captain Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) headlined the U-M offensive attack with seven shots, including four on goal and four in the second half.

Shots were an even 13-13 in the contest, while Maryland narrowly outcornered the Wolverines, 6-5. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) posted a season-high seven saves in the Michigan cage, while the Terps Natalie Hunter stopped all five U-M shots on goal.

The Wolverines will return home on Friday (Sept. 27) to host Missouri State at 4 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field before traveling to Evanston, Ill., to kick off the Big Ten Conference season against Northwestern at noon CDT on Sunday (Sept. 29).
