ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) registered her second career hat trick -- on three penalty strokes -- to headline the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's 5-0 win over Missouri State on Friday afternoon (Sept. 27) in front of 311 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines improved to 3-0 in home game this season.

Smith went 3-for-4 on stroke opportunities, netting two late in the first half and another late in the second. The Wolverines drew all four strokes as a result of Missouri State's goal-line fouls; several balls guaranteed to score were stopped only by MSU feet or shin guards. Smith upped her season-goal total to five, including four markers off strokes.

Senior/junior Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) put the Wolverines on the board at the 15:59 mark, scoring on a tipped ball off a penalty corner. McCallister inserted the ball to sophomore Lauren Thomas (Aylesbury, England/Aylesbury HS) on the nearside. Thomas swept a shot toward the nearside of the cage, where McCallister, camped out on the left post, redirected it over top of the sprawling MSU goalkeeper.

Freshman Sina Lampe (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Gymnasium Herkenrath) added another Michigan goal just three minutes later, at 18:59, completing a pass play in front of the cage to earn her first collegiate goal. Freshman Courtney Enge (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) fed the ball into the circle from the right side, and senior captain Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) corralled it in front, avoided a charging MSU goalkeeper and dished it to Lampe, who knocked it into the empty goal from near the right post.

Michigan dominated play through both halves, outshooting the Bears, 30-1, and outcornering them, 17-2. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and sophomore/freshman Chris Lueb (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands/Staples HS (Conn.)) combined to shut out Missouri State for U-M's second shutout victory of the season, while MSU's Andrea Bain and Katie Mulloy stopped 10 of Michigan's 17 shots on goal. The MSU defense also tallied three defensive saves.

Michigan will open Big Ten Conference play on Sunday (Sept. 29), traveling to Evanston, Ill., to face No. 12 Northwestern at noon CDT at Lakeside Field.

• Senior/junior Leslie Smith is U-M's second player in three games to record a hat trick. Senior Rachael Mack tallied three goals at William & Mary last Friday (Sept. 20). The hat trick was the second of Smith's career. She also recorded a hat trick at home last season vs. Delaware.

• Smith boasts seven stroke goals in her career. She went 3-for-4 on opportunities last season.

• Freshman Sina Lampe is the ninth different Wolverine player to score a goal this season. She joined freshman Eliza Stein as U-M's first-time goal scorers.

• Fifth-year senior Haley Jones upped her career shutout total to 15, claiming sole possession of the fifth spot among U-M's all-time leaders in the category.

On Michigan's performance ... "We had some goals we were trying to accomplish today, and I thought we did a pretty good job with it, especially in the first half. We're trying to work on passing, transferring the ball and finishing, which I think we did a pretty good job with. I was proud of them."

On the Wolverines' improvements in defense since the North Carolina game ... "It's just hard work. That was a real wake-up call for our team. Carolina is good, but we're certainly better than that as well. We've been working extremely hard, training hard and just making some adjustments on some of our counterattacks. It's been working out pretty well."

On freshman Sina Lampe's transition to collegiate field hockey ... "She's got extraordinary skills. She's been playing field hockey since she was little, so her stick skills are strong. She has a lot of experience; she can read the game well and understands hockey at a pretty high level. She's been really successful so far. There have definitely been some adjustments for her, obviously, both on the field and off, but she had done a great job."

On Leslie Smith and the number penalty strokes ... "It was unbelievable. We certainly knew Leslie had the ability to do that; she has an amazing, world-class stroke. So, we have complete confidence in her every time she steps up there."

On U-M's play ... "I think we played well today but not our best. We need to stay more detailed in our skills -- receiving, passing and transferring. But we had some nice goals today, which is something we've struggled with, but now they're starting to fall."

On her three stroke goals ... "I've always loved stroking. My high school coach used to always tell me, 'Just perfect your stroke, because it's such an important skill. You never know when it's going to come down to it.' I've always gone to the same spot. I really take pride in it. I don't practice them every day here, but late in the week, I'll take some time to do a few to stay crisp."

On her first collegiate goal ... "I'm really excited for the goal. It felt so great, especially here on our own field. It was just a great ball from Mack, and I just put it in."

On the transition from German to American field hockey ... "In Germany, we play really different, especially with our club teams. I love playing in both places. It's different here but not negative different. It's just faster and more physical. We do a lot more running here. But I like it. I've worked really hard, and I'm excited to play."
