ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (21-15, 7-8 Big Ten) hosts Northwestern (14-18-1, 5-10 Big Ten) in a three-game conference series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, beginning Friday (April 17) at 4 p.m., continuing Saturday (April 18) at 2 p.m. and wrapping up Sunday (April 19) at 11 a.m. The first two contests will be streamed on B1G+, while the finale will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
Notes
• Michigan has won eight of its last 10 games and six of its last nine conference contests, earning three series wins in that stretch. The Wolverines took the first two games against Michigan State, 4-2 on Friday (April 10) and 6-4 on Saturday (April 11), before dropping the finale. In their last home weekend, U-M took two of three from ranked Oregon, winning in run-rule fashion in the opener and walk-off fashion in the finale. Michigan is coming off a midweek win against Toledo on Tuesday (April 14).
• Colby Turner led the Wolverines offensively against Toledo, scoring three of Michigan's six runs. Turner leads the Big Ten with a .399 batting average and ranks second in conference games at .429, despite having 15 more at-bats than the leader. He also paces the Wolverines in runs (36), RBIs (33) and home runs (8). The junior carries a 16-game hitting streak, has reached base in 22 straight games and has failed to reach base in just two contests all season.
• Kurt Barr has served as Michigan's Friday starter since the second weekend of conference play, earning two wins in four starts while striking out 32 batters in 27 innings. Barr has allowed more than two runs just once this season and is coming off a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance against Michigan State. The senior recently became the 15th player in program history to surpass 200 career strikeouts and now sits at 210.
• Brayden Jefferis reached base safely in all five plate appearances against Toledo, capping the night with his first career home run. Jefferis singled in the second inning, was hit by a pitch and walked twice in the middle innings. The sophomore owns a 10-game hitting streak with four multi-hit games in that span and ranks third on the team with a .303 average.
• Shane Brinham entered the weekend rotation against Oregon and threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout. He followed with a five-strikeout outing against Michigan State, allowing three runs on eight hits to earn his third career win. After early struggles with walks, Brinham has issued just one free pass over his last three appearances.
• Noah Miller raised his batting average from below .200 on March 3 to .310 and now ranks second on the team. He recorded a three-hit game against Michigan State and added two hits against Toledo. The redshirt sophomore has scored 13 runs, driven in 18 and thrown out six runners attempting to steal.
• Cade Montgomery has thrived in a high-leverage relief role, allowing just three runs over his last 20.1 innings while striking out 18 batters. Montgomery has earned three saves in that span, including two in the last week, a 2.1-inning save at Michigan State and a 2.2-inning save against Toledo. The junior retired all eight batters he faced against the Rockets, including four by strikeout.
• Evan Haeger accounted for three of Michigan's four runs in the 4-2 series-opening win over Michigan State, scoring in the fifth, homering in the seventh and adding an RBI in the eighth for his third three-hit game of the season. The redshirt sophomore also reached base twice against Toledo and ranks fourth on the team with a .296 batting average.
• Northwestern enters the weekend at 14-18-1 overall and 5-10 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats split their first three conference series against USC, Oregon and Washington before earning their first series win against Michigan State. Northwestern was swept last weekend by Purdue, with Saturday's game going to extra innings, and is coming off a 12-11 midweek win over UIC that featured a 10-run sixth inning.
• Michigan holds a 129-38 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 1882. The Wolverines are 117-36 in conference matchups and 67-15 in Ann Arbor. The teams have met five times since 2020, with Michigan winning four, including a home sweep in 2023.
