
Michigan to Close Spring Break Trip With Pepperdine Series

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (6-5) will close out its seven-game spring break trip in California with a three-game series against Pepperdine (2-9). The series begins Thursday (March 5) at 1:30 p.m. PT, continues Friday (March 6) at 1:30 p.m. PT and concludes Saturday (March 7) at 1 p.m. PT. All three games will be played at Eddy D. Field Stadium and streamed on ESPN+.
Notes
• Michigan enters the series with a 6-5 record and is 2-2 on its spring break trip. U-M opened the trip with a series win over San Diego, taking the Saturday (Feb. 28) and Sunday (March 1) games by scores of 9-0 and 9-2 after dropping the opener in extra innings on Friday (Feb. 27). Most recently, the Wolverines suffered another extra-inning loss to California State Northridge on Tuesday (March 3).
• Tate Carey allowed three runs in each of his first two starts for a 5.59 ERA entering last weekend. Carey showed his top form against San Diego, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out seven. This season, he has pitched 15.2 innings with 15 strikeouts and holds a 1-1 record.
• With two strong starts in the opening weekends, Cade Montgomery moved into the Friday night role against San Diego. In his U-M debut, the junior struck out five in 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Against San Diego, he allowed four runs on three hits in 3.2 innings but still recorded four strikeouts. He has pitched 15 innings this season with 13 strikeouts and has allowed nine runs (eight earned) for a 4.80 ERA.
• Brenden Stressler has reached base safely in every game this season with hits in 10 of Michigan's first 11 contests. The junior leads the Wolverines with a .409 batting average, which ranks 11th in the Big Ten and inside the top 150 nationally. Stressler is averaging 1.64 hits per game, ranking eighth in the Big Ten and 64th nationally. He has two extra-base hits, nine runs and nine RBIs this season.
• Jack Laffitte made the start against CSUN in the midweek contest, becoming the second freshman to start a game for Michigan this season. Laffitte went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run and an RBI. He had previously appeared in four games, recording a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in four plate appearances as a pinch hitter.
• Gavin DeVooght leads the Wolverines and the Big Ten in appearances this season with seven while recording four saves, tied for the conference lead. DeVooght's saves are tied for second nationally with five other pitchers, with his most recent coming Sunday against San Diego. The junior holds a 1.50 ERA with 14 strikeouts over 12 innings pitched.
• Cade Ladehoff hit his second home run of the season Tuesday (March 3) against CSUN and is hitting .273 this year. The junior has seven extra-base hits with four doubles, one triple and two home runs. He has added seven runs and seven RBIs while reaching base in every contest. Ladehoff had just one hit over the weekend against San Diego but added a run and an RBI while reaching base via a walk and hit-by-pitch. He is one of four players to start every game this season, doing so at designated hitter.
• Carson Luna debuted against Stanford on Feb. 14 with a pinch-hit RBI single and started three additional games before the San Diego series but was held hitless over seven at-bats. Luna broke out against the Toreros, going 5-for-8 with three runs and two doubles while starting twice at second base. He followed with a two-hit performance against CSUN and is hitting .381 this season with three runs, eight hits and one RBI.
• Colby Turner leads the Wolverines with a 1.018 OPS and is the only U-M player with double-digit RBIs. Turner's 17 RBIs rank fifth in the Big Ten and 53rd nationally. He has recorded an extra-base hit in six of the last seven contests, with all eight of his extra-base hits coming during that span. The junior is hitting .340 this season and has added 12 runs to his 17 hits.
• Pepperdine enters the weekend with a 2-9 record and a two-game losing streak. The Waves opened the season with three losses to USC before earning a win against Fresno State. Over the weekend, Pepperdine dropped a series to Yale and most recently lost to Cal Poly on Tuesday (March 3). All-time, Michigan is 2-6 against Pepperdine and 1-5 in California, with the last series coming in 2020.
