PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Behind a strong pitching performance, the University of Michigan baseball team claimed the rubber match over Rutgers, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon (March 29) at Bainton Field to secure its first Big Ten series win of the season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Michigan (14-13, 3-6 Big Ten) responded with a solo home run from Cade Ladehoff with two outs in the second.
The Wolverines broke the game open in the top of the fourth, playing three runs. Following a groundout, Noah Miller singled, while Evan Haeger and Ladehoff drew walks to load the bases. Back-to-back singles from Brayden Jefferis and Greg Pace Jr. plated two runs before Ladehoff scored on a wild pitch. A strikeout and groundout left two runners stranded, but Michigan carried a 4-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
After the early Rutgers (15-12, 4-5 Big Ten) run, Max Debiec settled in, striking out three of the next six batters he faced. David Lally Jr. entered with one out in the third and induced a 4-6-3 double play to escape the inning. Lally worked around early traffic in both the fourth and fifth innings, using a double play and strikeout in the fourth and a strikeout with two groundouts in the fifth to keep the Scarlet Knights off the board.
Colby Turner doubled to lead off the fifth and came around to score on a Miller single, extending the lead to 5-1. Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth before Michigan added another run in the seventh, capitalizing on two Rutgers errors. The Scarlet Knights answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, but Lally struck out the final two batters to preserve a 6-2 advantage.
Rutgers went down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings as Michigan closed out the 6-2 victory.
Lally (win) tossed 6.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six. Debiec struck out three over 2.1 innings in the start. Offensively, Miller was the only Wolverine with multiple hits, while Ladehoff scored twice.
The Wolverines will return to Michigan and travel to Ypsilanti for a midweek matchup against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (March 31) at 4 p.m. at Oestrike Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
