ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A three-hit, three RBI day from freshman Josh Campbell helped the University of Michigan baseball team secure a 5-2 victory over Toledo on Wednesday afternoon (March 25) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Campbell went 3-for-4 for the first three hits of his career, and plated a run each in the second, third and fifth innings.
Toledo (10-13) scored in the top half of the first, while the Wolverines answered with an RBI single from Cade Ladehoff that scored Colby Turner in the home half. The Rockets got a run back in the third, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Michigan (12-12) broke the tie in the second, when Greg Pace Jr. doubled to open the frame and was brought home on Campbell's first career hit. Drew Culbertson followed with a single and eventually scored when he stole home to put the Wolverines in front 3-1.
U-M added another run in the third when Noah Miller singled with one out and was brought home on a single from Campbell. The Wolverines' final run came in the fifth as Evan Haeger singled and, after moving to third on a single from Pace, was brought home on Campbell's third hit of the game. The Rockets mustered just two hits and three baserunners after the third inning, as Grant Bradley, Preston Barr and Gavin DeVooght held Toledo scoreless to secure the 5-2 victory.
Campbell led the way offensively, with Pace adding a pair of hits, including a double, as part of a 10-hit Michigan performance at the plate. Turner, Miller and Haeger each chipped in with a hit and a run.
On the mound, Bradley (2-0) earned the win, throwing six innings while allowing the two Toledo runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Barr had his best outing of the season, pitching two scoreless innings and paving the way for DeVooght's seventh save of the season.
Michigan will head to Piscataway, N.J., for a three-game series against Rutgers. The series opener will take place on Friday (March 27) at 6 p.m. at Bainton Field, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
