ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Oakland, 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon (March 24) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The Wolverines stood three outs from victory before Oakland rallied for three runs in the ninth to flip the game.
Michigan (11-12) rallied for three runs to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 advantage. Cooper Mullens opened the frame with a walk and, after a groundout, Jonathan Kim also walked. Following an error, pinch runner Dane Morrow scored on a bunt single from Drew Culbertson. Brayden Jefferis delivered a go-ahead RBI double to give Michigan a 6-4 lead. Colby Turner followed with his third hit of the game, and Brenden Stressler drew a walk, but a flyout and strikeout left the bases loaded.
Oakland (5-17) answered in the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 7-6 lead. With the game on the line in the bottom of the inning, Michigan put the tying and winning runs on base as two walks opened the frame. After a flyout, Culbertson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Jefferis lined into a double play to end the game.
The Golden Grizzlies struck first with a double in the opening inning and built a 3-0 lead in the second using four walks and a hit. Michigan put runners on in each of the first three innings before breaking through in the fourth to tie the game. Noah Miller, Evan Haeger and Greg Pace Jr. each singled, with Haeger and Pace driving in runs. Pace later scored on a groundout by Jefferis to even the score.
Oakland regained the lead in the fifth on a walk. Michigan put runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but was unable to tie the game until the eighth.
Michigan totaled 10 hits, led by three from Turner and two from Pace. Jefferis paced the Wolverines with three RBIs.
On the mound, Erik Puodziunas turned in a strong relief outing, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five over three innings. Justin Brown and Tyler Finkbeiner combined for three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
