
Michigan Opens Big Ten Play with Win at USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team opened Big Ten Conference play with a 15-11 victory at USC on Sunday (March 15) at Rawlinson Stadium.
The Wolverines (6-2, 1-0 B1G) dominated the draw control battle, 22-6, as Emma Burke won 13 draws for her third double-digit effort this season, while Calli Norris secured three and Ava Class added two.
Michigan's defense was locked in against the Trojans (6-3, 0-1 B1G), causing 10 turnovers. Senior Grace Callahan tied a career-best with four caused turnovers, while Jordyn Harrison added two. In the cage, Elizabeth Johnson earned the win with five saves.
Offensively, Emma Bradbury, Class and Norris each recorded hat tricks, while Peyton Shreves added two goals. Norris led the offense with four goals and two assists for six points, and Caroline Byrd contributed two assists.
USC notched the first goal of the game, but U-M responded with three straight, capitalizing on two free-position opportunities and adding a wraparound finish from Bradbury. The Trojans answered with three consecutive goals of their own to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
USC extended its run to 5-0 early in the second quarter to take a two-goal lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half. Michigan settled in and applied offensive pressure, forcing a turnover that led to Katharine Merrifield finding Class with 10:51 left. Class completed her hat trick with her second free-position goal, and Bradbury connected with Kassidy Isaacson in traffic to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime.
Michigan controlled the draw in the first half, 10-3, with Burke winning eight.
The Wolverines surged out of the break, scoring six straight goals to build a 12-7 advantage. The run included two goals from Shreves and another from Bradbury.
The Trojans pulled within two with back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter, but Michigan outscored USC 3-1 over the final 12 minutes to secure the win.
U-M travels to State College, Pa., on Sunday (March 22) for a noon contest against the Nittany Lions. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
