SURPRISE, Ariz. -- In extra innings, the University of Michigan baseball team (3-1) fell to No. 11-ranked Oregon State, 5-4, on Monday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Surprise Stadium to wrap up its opening weekend in Arizona. The Beavers ended the game with a walk-off home run in the tenth, handing Michigan its first loss of the season.
After six innings, Oregon State led, 3-1, but Michigan responded with a four-run surge over the next inning and a half to tie the game. In the seventh, Brayden Jefferis led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a flyout, Colby Turner singled to left, driving in Jefferis. Noah Miller then singled, and Matthew Ossenfort delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single through the infield, scoring Turner from third. Michigan could not add more, as a strikeout ended the inning.
Oregon State (3-1) opened the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double, but Gavin DeVooght, coming in from the bullpen, retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a groundout. A bloop single to shallow right allowed the Beavers to take a 4-3 lead, though a flyout ended the inning, leaving one runner stranded.
In the eighth, Dane Morrow led off with a single, followed by another single from Brenden Stressler. After a sacrifice bunt by Drew Culbertson, Morrow scored on a groundout, tying the game at four.
In the bottom of the eighth, Oregon State loaded the bases with two outs on three free passes, but a groundout prevented any runs from scoring. U-M had a chance to take the lead in the ninth as Elie Kligman singled with one out. After another out, Evan Haeger singled to put runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the inning. DeVooght continued his strong relief work in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two and catching a 105-mph liner to force extra innings.
Jefferis drew a two-out walk in the tenth and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, but a groundout ended the inning for U-M.
The Wolverines got contributions from eight different players at the plate, with Turner, Noah Miller, and Stressler each recording two hits. Turner added a run and an RBI, along with Jefferies, who reached base twice on walks. On the mound, U-M used six pitchers with David Lally Jr. drawing the start. Lally went three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out three. DeVooght entered in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three.Â
Both team's starters were locked in to start the game, allowing just one combined baserunner over the first three innings. The Wolverines tallied the first hit of the contest with a Cade Ladehoff one-out double in the fourth.
Michigan will return to action versus Florida State at the College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on Friday (Feb. 20). The game is set for 11 a.m. CT, and will stream on FloCollege. Â
