Seniors Lead Michigan to Win Over Indiana in Regular-Season Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team ended the regular season with an 8-3 win over Indiana on Saturday afternoon (May 17) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The senior class led Michigan (33-21, 16-14 Big Ten) on Senior Day with Benny Casillas, AJ Rausch, Joe Longo and Matt Spear tallying multi-hit games. Casillas hit a three-run home run while Rausch scored twice. Mitch Voit added two hits with a run and two RBI. Starter Ricky Kidd pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, Tate Carey (9-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Will Rogers picked up his eighth save.
Three straight singles started the bottom of the first for Michigan, with Casillas scoring on a Voit single. Rausch scored on a double play, but Michigan led 2-0 after one inning.
The Wolverines added three runs in the second after another 1-2-3 inning from Kidd in the top half. One-out singles from Spear and Tyler Inge. Casillas sent an Indiana offering over the wall in left field to put Michigan up 5-0.
Indiana (31-23, 16-14 Big Ten) loaded the bases one out on the third on two hits and a walk, but Max Debiec entered and faced one batter inducing a 6-3 double play to keep the Hoosiers scoreless.
The Wolverines' bats cooled, producing just two baserunners until the sixth inning. Indiana tied to start a rally in the fourth, again loading the bases. However, Preston Barr got the final out of the frame to keep U-M's lead at 5-0.
IU got on the board in the fifth, scoring twice on two hits and an error, but Carey stranded the bases loaded. The Hoosiers put two on in the in the sixth, but a double play and a caught stealing kept Indiana at bay.
The seventh inning opened with an IU home run, but Rogers struck out two of the next three batters to get out of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, U-M scored two runs. Rausch singled, followed by a Voit double. Jeter Ybarra grounded out, but it pushed Rausch home. Voit then scored on an error, and the Wolverine led, 7-3.
Rogers pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and four walks forced home Robert Hamchuk to add an insurance run in the home half. A two-out Rogers walk was erased with a strikeout for the final out, and he picked up the save.
Next up for Michigan, the Wolverines are in Pool B of the Big Ten Tournament and will take on Illinois in the opening game on Tuesday (May 20). First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.Â
