OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 7-seeded University of Michigan baseball team rallied late to tie the game and went to extra innings, but came up one run short of doing it again in a 6-5, 10-inning setback against No. 11 seed Illinois on Tuesday morning (May 20) in the Big Ten Tournament opener at Charles Schwab Field.
Trailing 5-2 in heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Wolverines' bats warmed up. Mitch Voit led off the inning with a home run to right-center to trim the deficit. Jeter Ybarra followed with a five-pitch walk. Three batters later, Noah Miller deposited a 1-1 pitch into the seats in left to tie the game at five.
Will Rogers kept the Illini scoreless, and Michigan (33-22) sought to end the game after loading the bases with one out. However, a 4-2-3 double play ended the threat and pushed the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, Illinois (30-23) hit a two-out solo homer to put it in front, and U-M went down in order to fall to the Illini.
Voit and Miller were the only Wolverines to tally multiple hits, adding a triple and double, respectively. Kurt Barr took the ball for U-M, but could not make it out of the first inning after giving up three runs. Dylan Vigue was strong in relief, striking out a career-high seven batters over five innings of work.
Illinois started the game with three runs behind a leadoff double, three walks and a two-run single, but the Wolverines could not respond in the bottom half, going down in order. Vigue was strong in the second, striking out the side.
Michigan finally broke through in the fourth, plating a run when Ybarra's groundout scored Voit, who tripled to lead off the frame. Vigue was strong once again in the fifth, facing just three batters and ending his day with his career-high seventh strikeout.
Tyler Inge doubled to open the fifth inning, and U-M threatened after a Greg Pace Jr. walk, but a foul out and two flyouts ended the inning.
David Lally Jr. opened the sixth and gave up a leadoff single, but a 4-6-3 double play and a groundout kept Illinois off the board. Ybarra led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and he came around to score on a double from Miller to cut the Illini lead to 3-2.
The Fighting Illini used a leadoff single, a fielder's choice, a walk and a single to increase their lead to 4-2, but Lally recorded his first strikeout to strand two and prevent more damage. However, Illinois pushed its lead back to three runs with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning.
Michigan will face UCLA in its final game of the Big Ten Tournament at 10 a.m. CT on Thursday (May 20) at Charles Schwab Field. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
